Dear Parents of CSI Students:
I apologize for my delay in getting this information out to you, but better late than never!
We had an unbelievable showing at Davenport North last Saturday. After proving to ourselves that we are able to improve our show and start seriously competing with some incredible groups, we entered into North against some more tough competition. We placed THIRD in class 4A at the end of the day round, placed SECOND RUNNER-UP in the finals, and ELISE CASTRO WON HER SECOND BEST SOLOIST AWARD! (Sam Callaway won Best Male Soloist for Blue Vibrations). We swept those captions! Way to go Elise and Sam!
I felt our focus was a little "off" compared to Waukee as we entered into the afternoon competition. However, this group continues to surprise me by having a great warm-up and then having a very nice afternoon show. At the end of the day, the scores went like this:
1) Waukee - 593 points
2) CR Prairie - 570 points
3) Central - 549.5 points
4) Totino Grace - 548 points
5) Waukee Prep - 510.5
6) Prairie Prep - 484.5
We were in fourth place in choreography, and TIED FOR SECOND with Prairie in vocals!
Our band placed THIRD PLACE during the day - .5 AHEAD of Prairie, 1.5 behind Totino, and 4 points behind Waukee.
After making some changes to our show and trying to get the students to understand we needed to be STRONGER in our choreography or we might be heading home with fourth, I watched them mature AGAIN as they headed into their nighttime finals performance. The performance was ANOTHER improvement and they represented Central in an incredible way!
The finals results were: (rankings were converted to points - 1st=17, 2nd=15, 3rd=13, 4th=11, 5th=9, 6th=7)
1) Waukee - 1st, 1st, 1st, 1st (Best Vocals and Best Choreography) = 68 points
2) Prairie - 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd = 58 points
3) Central - 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th = 52 points
4) Totino - 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 4th = 48 points
5) Waukee prep - 5th, 5th, 5th, 5th = 36 points
6) Prairie prep - 6th, 6th, 6th, 6th, = 28 points
Not only did we stay in SECOND RUNNER-UP, we placed in front of Totino-Grace (ANOTHER group we have never beat in our history), we moved UP TO THIRD in choreography, and TIED FOR SECOND in vocals!
PLUS - we were ahead in TOTAL points in the afternoon on Totino-Grace by only 1.5.....in the evening, we increased that spread to 17 POINTS! We were behind Prairie in the afternoon by 21.5 points....in the evening, we tightened the spread to only 12 POINTS!
Further - we placed 2nd by one judge (out of four)....Ben Schrank was one of the critique judges and did not score in the evening. He told all of us that if he would have been scoring at night, he too would have had us in second place! Ben's opinion is one I greatly respect and that was a huge compliment!
MOVING AHEAD - it doesn't get any easier! We head to Mt.Pleasant this weekend to face all of our local schools, including Iowa City High (who won at Linn-Mar this year), Muscatine (who is off to a great start), and Cedar Rapids Xavier (who we beat a couple of weeks ago and they don't want it to happen again). We will need to stay focused!
We will be tweaking some things in our show this week to hopefully make it even better as we move forward with what will be a very busy month with Mt Pleasant, Ft. Atkinson (2/9), Great River (2/16), and Southeast Polk (2/23).
Thank you again for your never-ending and undying support of a phenomenal group of students!
Go Blue!
